This spirited little dark bay mustang came to us in November 2014. He had been rounded up by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and for several years was passed from one human to the next, all of whom tried to train him without success. Ultimately one human recognized his need to just be a horse, and so he came to us and received a new name: Rio – Spanish for “The River.”
It’s an appropriate name, as his long, flowing mane and tail are distinctive. Although small in stature, Rio quickly assembled a mini-herd within the herd, and is an undisputed leader. He is becoming increasingly comfortable in his new home and his suspiciousness toward humans is slowly waning.
