CHICKENS

We love all of our animals, and we LOVE our chickens!

They come primarily as adults from families who can no longer keep them. We do not participate in the breeding business, as it’s especially awful for male chicks (the majority of them are killed in ways too brutal to write here).

Our flock currently numbers nine and includes two fabulous roosters — Miso, who was found in front of a ramen shop in Berkeley as a juvenile, and Sergeant Pepper, a spunky black-and-white Bantam. Who says roosters don’t get along? These two have always found a way. It helps that we’ve always had large coops, and sometimes more than one, so they, and their hens, could choose where to roost.

Our eight hens — Becky Jean, The Buff Babes, Di, Goldie, Pilgrim and Toaster — are a beautiful array of color and breed and lay eggs ranging in hue from creme to green and blue.

We are deeply grateful to Pamela Eibeck and Bill Jeffery for their support of our entire flock, which includes several of their hens whom they raised but had to rehome when they moved out of state.
